Snag My Freebies

Hey, babes!

I'M AMY

A Midwest unschool mama, quilter, crocheter (yep, we’re making it a word!), and graphic designer who turned my "little hobbies" into a dream career. I’m all about BLTs with basil mayo, diving into fantasy novels, and pretending it’s fall year-round (pumpkin spice forever, amiright?).

My unofficial mission? To prove that you can make every day just a little more magical.

Free Jelly Roll Quilt Pattern For Beginners - Amy Lollis

I have this little problem: when I go to a fabric shop, those cute little bundles of 5" squares and 2.5" strips just jump right into my cart. I'm not even sure how it happens. I go in for a pack of needles and come out with three new charm packs and a jelly roll.

Anyone else?

They're like the snacks at the grocery store checkout: yes, you bought the things that you needed, but you also helped yourself to a little treat, too.

Fabric precuts are like cookies. I don't need them, but they definitely won't go to waste.

And they look so PRETTY on my shelf, I don't really want to cut into them. But when I do use them, I'm always STOKED with the finished quilt.

Keep scrolling to get the free jelly roll quilt pattern for beginners!

What you need for the quilt top:

  • Two jelly rolls (or a total of 80 2.5" strips)

Wait, that's it?

Yep. We're making it easy-peasy.

Step 1: Divide the strips into two stacks of 40 strips. One stack of lights, and one stack of darks.

Step 2: Sew the strips together. You'll have 40 strip sets, each with one light and one dark fabric. DO NOT press yet.

Step 3: Cut the strip sets into 4.5" pieces. You should be able to get (360) 4.5" pieces total (nine from each strip set).

Step 4: Press all pieces toward the darker fabric.

Step 5: Sew pieces together into sets of 4. Just for fun, make a few of your four-patches the same color so they stand out! You should have 90 four-patches.

Step 6: Sew your four-patches together into ten rows of nine blocks. Sew the rows together to finish your quilt top! It should finish around 80" x 72". Not bad for a one-weekend project!

Step 7 (optional, but highly recommended): Frolic in a field with your newly-completed quilt top! (see this Instagram post for more details).
